STOP: 0x0000007e Error and Non-Intel Processor

0x0000007e may occur at restart if all of the below conditions are true:

  • your computer uses a processor other than Intel
  • you’ve been upgrading to Windows XP SP2 or to Windows XP SP3

The following sequence of events takes place:

  • A System Preparation (Sysprep) image is created on a computer equipped with an Intel processor.
  • This image in later used on a computer that uses a different processor.
  • During startup, the Intel processor driver (Intelppm.sys) is trying to load because an orphaned registry key from the original Sysprep image still remains in the registry.
  • The system crashes with the message 0x0000007e.

To remove the cause of your problem, you need start up in Safe Mode and locate the following key in the registry:

BIOS

You may need to update BIOS. Contact your hardware vendor for the latest version. During BIOS update, it is recommended to temporarily disable such BIOS memory options as shadowing and caching.

Drivers and Remote Control Services

If error 0x0000007e remains after successful update of BIOS, update or disable video adapter drivers.

If the error message includes file with “.sys” extension, that is most likely a driver case. If the driver is used during startup process, start up in Safe Mode or Recovery Console and disable or delete the driver.
